[edit] Momentarily Mortal
This name stems from A-net's 19-character name length restriction. I wanted to use the name Momentary Immortality, which is a phrase from the Styx song Superstars, from the album The Grand Illusion, circa 1977. Toward the end of the song, when Tommy Shaw finishes singing, Dennis De Young has a voiceover like a circus hawker, "Superstars, yes, yes, superstars! Step right this way--everyone's welcome. We want your dreams. The offer is simple: momentary immortality, my love!" Well that phrase is 21-characters long, so Momentarily Mortal was born. Which I think is fitting for a monk, anyway. With Momentarily Mortal on your team, you are only temporarily subject to death, and not at all if I can help it.
With my 3rd character, I decided to hench it up, and take the shortcut to the Crystal Desert from Gates of Kryta mission via Temple of the Ages. I was in the habit of doing most all the skill quests on the way to ascension rather than buying skills for the outrageous price of 1K that one is eventually stuck with. Which means that by taking this shortcut, I missed protection skills, and I became comfortable in a healer role but not a protection monk role.
Besides often being called on to help friends and guildies in the more difficult missions as a monk, I fell into the habit of farming the Fissure of Woe, where monks are often in short supply, and I quickly got more than 500K total experience on Mortal, much more than on my prior two characters. And this was entirely in a 100% healer role, a self-developed build that I have since improved on by voluminous reading.
People kept saying you need to learn to be a prot monk.... And finally because I had some disposable income primarily from running with Bor Dammerung, I came to GuildWiki and found some basic builds and skills I needed to purchase. I started playing with these immediately, and began contributing my feedback to GWiki on the builds, so hopefully the build(s) here are getting better. In my limited circle of friends/guildmates, I have quite the reputation as a monk. Which is somewhat sad, because so few people seem to be attracted to the role of support character (Monk, Mesmer).
Lately, I have investigated the Invincible Monk build from here and from some forums like GWGuru. (Better late than never.) Momentarily Mortal began training vs. Hydras in Skyward Reach, then moved on to farming Griffons and Minotaurs in Prophet's Path. So now I am just waiting for an opportunity to learn to duo with an SS/SV Necro in UW. GOAL: I play enough that 15K armor and FoW armor are vanity possibilities for one or more of my characters. So I need some Ectos and Obsid Shards.
