User:Gem/User box competition
From GuildWiki
[edit] The Competition Rules
- Design a nice user box for one or both of the two competition categories.
- Each user may submit two user boxes for each of the two categories. The submissions can be changed during the competition.
- The competition ends on January 1st 2007.
- Winners will be selected by Gem. The deciding factors are looks and content. A nice icon, great color choices and a great idea (funny stuff might be great, but not all great stuff is funny) are things that may let you win.
- Winners will receive something nice.
Note: If you can't achieve what you want with the {{userbox}} template, feel free to copy my box layout from User:Gem/Boxes and use it as a basis. Please do not edit the page itself.
Remember: You may freely edit your submissions before the competition is over. I will give feedback and some other users might also comment.
[edit] Using the boxes
All users are allowed to and encouraged to use the user boxes submitted for the competition. The point of the whole thing was to get a bunch of nice user boxes for people to use.
If you use the user boxes for the competition on your user page, you may want to give credit to the creators of the boxes with the following user box:
| UBC | This user borrowed userboxes from Gem's Userbox Competition. |
[edit] Winners
The winners have been selected and may fetch their prices in game. The best 3 of both categories may select from a selection of prizes and the ones with an honorable mention gain one Red-Iris Flower.
[edit] Category 1: A user box for Gem
The entries in this category were few, but all of them were great and would suit me. I selected the winners based on both the looks and the idea. There were great ideas amongst the entries, but from those with the best ideas three entries stroke me with their looks.
The Winner:
- User:Poki with his This user likes to persuade other people to put credits on their user pages.
This box has everything in it. Wiki humor, fits me well and is simply too great looking! This is just what I was hoping for when I started this competition!
2nd place:
- User:130.58 with his This user likes to blind, cripple, maim, and immolate Bladed Aatxes for fun and profit.
This user box shows deeper knowledge of my playhabits which needs deeper exploration of my user page or reading my comments reagularily on the wiki. The colors are also nice with a fitting icon.
3rd place:
- Again User:130.58 with his This user edits the wiki with Opera.
The idea for the box is a good one, gotten from my user page. I like gray user boxes as you might notice from my current user page, and the custom icon is just awesome.
Honorable mentions:
- User:Kalomeli with her This user is a top 8 ITG player in Finland.
This one is a bit unfair. She knows me well and could easily spot the user box which I was missing from my current user page. I was really surprised that I had forgotten a dance game box. However, this honorable mention goes to the box creator simply because I love her. <3 The user box has nothing to do with it, although I tried to get you think so. Sorry guys. ;)
[edit] Category 2: A user box for all wiki users
With more entries than I had hoped for this category was a success. Selecting the winners wasn't easy, and I just couldn't make as many honorable mentions as I would have liked to. I also derivdes the official boxes for taking part and winning in the competition from this category. (Thes official ones will be published soon)
The Winner:
- User:130.58 with his Userboxes come to this user's house to steal his wallet and invade his dreams. There is no escaping them. Even now, they watch us with their steely eyes.
This entry is simply great! It's so paranoid, so fun, so grim looking.
2nd place:
- User:Myrrinth with his This user is prone to spontaneously combust during his discussion replies and postings, causing prolonged burning to innocent bystanders.
This box is a real utility box which some users might want to use, as a joke or not. And it looks great.
3rd place:
- User:Sefre with his This user shuns WoW and their tempting elves.
This might become one of the most used user boxes in the wiki. ;) With its great looks and a great custom icon it deserved it's place with the winners!
Honorable mentions: Too many, but I'll list the ones which were competing for the winning positions. These are in the order they were submitted in.
- User:Smurf with his This user page is better than yours.
It just makes me smile. The colors are so happy, the icon is so happy. The whole text is so happy. I like this very much.
- User:BrianG with his This user strives to attain the enlightened state of Buildguru.
The idea is a good one with a fitting icon. I would have hoped for a little more interesting color scheme, which might have even taken this one to the winners.
- User:Caasig with both of his entries.
Great utility boxes for new wiki users especially! The 'new to wiki' box is just as plain as it needs to be and the 'work in progress' box also uses a very fitting color scheme with an icon large enough to be noticed.
[edit] Discussion on winners
Feel free to discuss the winning users, the winning boxes or my judgement. Sorry for all of those who didn't win. You all deserve a user box for taking part. I'll try to make the official one soon. --

- Oh-well, at least I am sound in the knowledge that my boxes are floating around the Wiki. I thought the prize would be Wiki-related, so I'm actually not too bothered. :) I'm bit surprised on the Spontaneous Combustion one...the image fits the text and it looks nice, but I still don't understand how the box "fits" people...who combusts while talking? Confuses me... Entropy 04:56, 2 January 2007 (CST)
- You did well Gem, thanks for organising this, you got lots of GWiki people involved which is really cool, even me and I think that userboxes are the scurge of wikis everywhere! - Gem, thanks for running this competition, it generated a great number of fun submissions! I enjoyed looking through them and seeing what others came up with. Its true the colors on mine could have been better, I thought so myself but I really suck at that so I played it safe. If anyone wants to use either of my submissions, feel free to edit the colors. If it looks good let me know and I might use your color scheme on my page. -- BrianG 11:08, 2 January 2007 (CST)
- This competition was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed looking at everyone's submissions - there are definitely a lot of creative people on the Wiki! Thanks again Gem for running this contest. --Myrrinth 16:08, 2 January 2007 (CST)
The winners (#1) of each category, 130.58 and Poki, may use the following box on their user page. It includes the well protected gem icon so use it with pride!
| | This user won Gem's "User box competition". |
Everyone who took part in either category may use the following box on their user page.

Hope you like them! --

- Ofcourse you may use anything you like, just keep the gem icons away if you aren't one of the two winners. I saw a nice variation on someones user page who got a honorable mention. --

[edit] Competition category #1: A user box for Gem
Design a nice user box for the user page of Gem. The user box must suit the user and his user page. Using the Gem and Heart icons from LordBiro is acceptable. ;)

Comments of the creator:
- Userboxes are useful, but also menacing. This is an icon for those who want to celebrate their nightmarish, overpowering fear of userboxes... and maybe slowly come to terms with it. ;)
- I made this as a humorous counterpoint to all the cheerful userboxes with their light, happy colors and pithy one-liners. As such, it's rather dark and the text is intentionally overlong and rantful. The foetal position picture was just too appropriate not to use. — 130.58 (talk) 03:14, 25 December 2006 (CST)

Comments of the Judge:
- An older idea nicely redone. I don't generally like the use of skill icons in user boxes, but the others have used them nicely as they fit the theme. This one however doesn't have such a theme, so I would recommend a custom icon, although this is possibly the best icon to use if you don't want to make a custome one. --

- I think this box is pretty self explanatory. But just in case someone misses it, bascially, this user can do very bad translations to non-native languages, which will probably end up sounding the opposite of what the user intended. :P Queen Schmuck 15:32, 27 December 2006 (CST)

- Heh, this is for Auron of Neon if he wants to use it. If he does it'll hopefully get him into less trouble ;) (I don't want to make this too political but I don't think Auron should be hung out to dry because of the old one, it was made for him by someone else and he probably didn't expect all the outcry about it when he added it to his user page.) --Xasxas256 08:04, 28 December 2006 (CST)

- They're essentially the same, I just wasn't sure which icon I preferred, tell me which is better and I'll make that my second submission. Ages ago Stabber had a list of User pages of people who have better things to do than create elaborate user pages possibly in response to Gem's Nice user pages. I once pointed out to Stabber that Fyren's wierd mooing user page with just one edit should have been on the list and was bitterly disappointed when he finally got around to editing it. :P By an odd coincidence Gem accidentally made 2 edits (I made this userbox yesterday but didn't get around to posting it) to Fyren's user page and further eroded his claim to greatness! I've always been equally intrigued and weirded out by Fyren's mooing so this is a tribute to it :)
- I'm not overly fussed about winning this competition but if there was an award for the longest back story for a userbox, I'd be a shoo in for that wouldn't I!? --Xasxas256 08:04, 28 December 2006 (CST)
Edit: Ah bugger it should have read the rules, you're not a PvPer I know that, and as for the mooing thing...well I dunno I suppose you could aspire to be a cow! :P Pick one for me Gem and I'll withdraw the other two from the competition. --Xasxas256 08:08, 28 December 2006 (CST)
Edit2: Honestly this is why I don't use userboxes!!! Ok now that I've read the rules and this time actually understood them (ie I can have up to two in one section) you can ignore what I've stuck out above and instead poke me with a giant stick that goes from Finland to Australia because the sheer stress from userbox competitions has made me pass out! --Xasxas256 08:12, 28 December 2006 (CST)

- I think I missed the connection between the box and the history, but I like the looks of the white box. --

- Yeah even by my standards that was pretty nonsensical. Ok I'll make the second one my submission and I've improved that text. Let's be honest there's lots of mooing here on the GuildWiki so I see plenty of demand for it! --Xasxas256 03:46, 29 December 2006 (CST)
- Actually, I just now understood the box idea as I was looking at the change history and saw what the links linked to. Blame the 5-6 AM editing for not noticing. --

Hey Gem, I'd like to say in advance that I am a userbox amateur and also partially color-blind, so I kept the design simple on these userboxes. If you have any color suggestions/requests, please be specific and I can change them accordingly.

- Great box. Both the image and the wording of the info are perfect. I might adopt this one in place of my old one some time in the near future. As it is the quallity of my builds has been slipping lately and I don't think I qualify as a bona fide guru anymore :P—

- Yes, that was part of the motivation in changing the wording. I wanted to show that it was something that I strived for, but that it was too subjective of a goal to confidently declare that I had already achieved it. -- BrianG 14:48, 29 December 2006 (CST)
Comments of the creator:
- The background color was chosen mainly for simplicity and readability but can be changed to suit preference. You could add another zero along with the gold symbol as well, but I thought this was clear enough to make the point. You could also change "currently" to "constantly" depending on the user, or change the number and tell people how rich you are! ;)
Comments of the Judge:
- I like the plain look of the box as it tries to reflect how poor you are. Maby a really really light brown instead of white thou. --
(talk) 11:21, 29 December 2006 (CST)
- Hmmm, how about that? I think it looks a bit better than white. There is no color named "lightbrown", and due to my color-blindness I am really just guessing when it comes to subtle colors like beige etc, so please choose a color if you like! :) -- BrianG 11:45, 29 December 2006 (CST)

- Color looks good and so does the image. Imo you should stick with the single platinum icon, as no one ever talks about how rich/poor they are in terms of gold :P—

Comments of the creator: So we have an "Anti-WoW" Userbox, but what about the game that spawned one of the most famous quotes ever! It's going on my Userpage either way :D This is my first attempt at a userbox, so be gentle...--Carnival King 07:01, 30 December 2006 (CST)
EDIT - Fund a decent picture on the Wikipedia and resized it. Now the entry is complete: Make your Time! I wonder if anyone could use this idea for a new skill in the vein of "Make Your Time!" or "For Great Justice!". That would be awesome...--Carnival King 05:48, 31 December 2006 (CST)

Comments of the Judge:
- I ofcourse like this as I suggested submitting it here. Nothing to fix imho, but I would suggest using the {{user box}} template. That would also center the image for you. See other submissions on how it works. --
