This guide lists charm locations for every animal companion in the game. The purpose of this guide is to assist in filling your Zaishen Menagerie, but it can easily serve as a quick reference if you just want a specific pet.
Some pets may have charm locations that are dependent on having a specific quest active and/or completed. Since this is meant to be a general-purpose guide, those locations should not be listed here unless it is the only way to obtain the pet (e.g. Black Moa).
Pet | Guild Wars chapter | Explorable | Nearest Town / Outpost | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Albino Rat |
Eye of the North | Vloxen Excavations | Umbral Grotto | The three directly in front of the zone portal will usually be engaged and killed by skelk, so turn right to find a couple more. |
Black Bear |
Prophecies | Ice Caves of Sorrow mission | Ice Caves of Sorrow outpost | Usually spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. Also charmable in Pre-Searing (see notes for details). |
Black Moa |
Factions | Ferndale | Aspenwood Gate (Kurzick) | Only spawns if someone in the party has completed The Beak of Darkness or is on the final objective of that quest. Be careful of the many groups of dredge that patrol the area. |
Black Widow |
Core | The Underworld | Temple of the Ages, Zin Ku Corridor, or Chantry of Secrets | You need a character who is Ascended, Weh no Su, or that has completed Hunted! to gain access to The Underworld. Once in the Underworld, you and your party will need to complete one quest from any Reaper other than the Reaper of the Labyrinth. Once the reward is accepted, a level 20 Black Widow of random evolution will spawn. See spider run for the quickest method. |
Black Wolf |
Eye of the North | Grothmar Wardowns | Longeye's Ledge | Just east from the outpost, up the hill before the bridge. The mandragor and skale can be easily avoided. |
Crane |
Factions | Minister Cho's Estate | Ran Musu Gardens | Just northeast of Minister Cho's Menagerie. You'll have to fight through some relatively weak Sickened Animals to get there. |
Crocodile |
Nightfall | Lahtenda Bog | Blacktide Den | You'll have to run or fight to this one, as it only spawns in the western lake. May be difficult to charm due to enemy patrols and pop-ups. |
Dune Lizard |
Prophecies | Prophet's Path | Heroes' Audience | Usually spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
Flamingo |
Nightfall | Churrhir Fields | Kamadan, Jewel of Istan | Since this is the Nightfall tutorial area, reaching and charming a flamingo here is a simple task. |
Hyena |
Nightfall | Poisoned Outcrops | Lair of the Forgotten | Usually spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
Iguana |
Eye of the North | Riven Earth | Rata Sum | Northeast from the portal, near the Golem Foundry. You'll have to either kill or run past some venomweavers that drop in on the way. |
Jahai Rat |
Nightfall | The Mirror of Lyss | Honur Hill | In the flats to the northeast. Kill the nearby enemies or wait for them to move away. |
Jingle Bear |
Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Eye of the North | Only appears if someone in the party has completed all the Wintersday quests from Lieutenant Thackeray. |
Lion |
Nightfall | Vehjin Mines | Basalt Grotto | Sometime spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
Lioness |
Nightfall | Vehjin Mines | Basalt Grotto | Sometime spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
Lurker |
Factions | Pongmei Valley | Maatu Keep | You can usually avoid all enemies by running south from Maatu Keep, then heading east along the southern wall of the zone, then turning northeast at the resurrection shrine, but you may want to bring some heroes/henchmen in case you aggro anything. The red crabs there will be named "Reef Lurker," but they will unlock as "Lurker" at the Menagerie. |
Lynx |
Prophecies | Gates of Kryta mission | Gates of Kryta outpost | Just south from the starting point, near Oink. |
Melandru's Stalker |
Prophecies | Old Ascalon | Sardelac Sanitarium | You'll have to run or fight to this one, as it only spawns in the northwest corner, south of the portal to The Breach, and in the middle of the western edge, near Shalev the Hermit. Also charmable in Pre-Searing. |
Moa Bird / Strider |
Prophecies | The Great Northern Wall mission | The Great Northern Wall outpost | Just past the first group of devourers. Same as the Strider from Pre-Searing. |
Moss Spider |
Core | Special | Special | Can only be obtained by getting a Moss Spider Egg from a Gift of the Traveler (or purchase it from other players) and turning it in to Emryd. Or you can pay Helena to unlock it. |
Mountain Eagle |
Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Eye of the North | One or two will spawn near the portal to Battledepths. Stay close to the Eye to avoid the mandragor. |
Phoenix |
Factions | Divine Path | Imperial Sanctum | Must complete the Imperial Sanctum mission to access Divine Path. |
Polar Bear |
Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Boreal Station | In the enemy-free stretch before the Snow Wurms. |
Rainbow Phoenix |
Eye of the North | Hall of Monuments | Eye of the North | Only appears under certain conditions; see the notes section of its article. |
Raven |
Eye of the North | Sacnoth Valley | Doomlore Shrine | It is possible to get through Dalada Uplands with only aggroing two groups of Charr; swinging wide to the west and south around Molotov Rocktail will take you through mostly empty territory. See the notes section of its article on how to charm it once you're in Sacnoth Valley. |
Reef Lurker |
Factions | Archipelagos | Cavalon | Usually spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
Tiger |
Factions | Sunqua Vale | Tsumei Village | Head straight north from the outpost. Enemies here will not attack on sight, making this a quick and easy charming trip. |
Warthog |
Prophecies | Sage Lands | The Wilds | Just outside the outpost. Also charmable in Pre-Searing. |
White Crab |
Eye of the North | Arbor Bay | Vlox's Falls | Near the resurrection shrine straight to the south. Although it is possible to avoid all the krait patrols on the way, it takes very careful timing; most players would probably find it easier to fight their way through. |
White Jingle Moa |
Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Eye of the North | Only appears if someone in the party has completed all the Wintersday 2009 quests from Lieutenant Thackeray. |
White Moa |
Eye of the North | Drakkar Lake | Sifhalla | Rare spawn, keep rezoning until you see a flock of them. They will run fairly quickly away from the outpost, so bring a running skill or two to make sure you can catch one. |
White Tiger |
Factions | Arborstone | Arborstone outpost or Tanglewood Copse |
Usually spawns close enough to either outpost to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. |
White Wolf |
Eye of the North | Drakkar Lake | Sifhalla | At the Shrine of the Wolf Spirit, either a White or Black Wolf will spawn, so you may have to rezone a few times. You'll have to either run past or fight a couple Jotun on the way. |
Wolf / Snow Wolf |
Prophecies | Traveler's Vale | Yak's Bend | Usually spawns close enough to charm without aggroing anything. If not, rezone until it does, or just bring some heroes to kill the stuff in the way. Also charmable in Pre-Searing and is the default pet for PvP characters. |
