Pet charming guide
From GuildWiki
This guide lists charm locations for every pet in the game. If you find a charm location that's easier to reach, feel free to add it in place of the existing one. The purpose of this guide is to assist in filling your Zaishen Menagerie, but it can easily serve as a quick reference if you just want a specific pet.
Some pets may have additional charm locations that are dependent on having a specific quest in your quest log.
All mentions of running are assuming you're a primary Ranger. If you can set up your chosen non-Ranger primary to run, it does make things easier. See the Running guide for more information on running.
| Pet | Guild Wars chapter | Explorable | Nearest Town/Outpost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Albino Rat | Eye of the North | Vloxen Excavations | Umbral Grotto | The three directly in front of the zone portal will be engaged and killed by enemies, so turn right to find two of them available to charm. |
| Black Bear | Prophecies | Spearhead Peak | Copperhammer Mines | You'll have to fight past some Ice Imps and Siege Ice Golems to reach one. Also charmable in Pre-Searing through a trick. |
| Black Moa | Factions | Ferndale | Aspenwood Gate (Kurzick) | Only spawns during or after The Beak of Darkness. You can party with someone who already completed the quest without having to do the tedious quest-line yourself, and the Black Moa will appear. |
| Black Widow | Core | The Underworld | Temple of the Ages, Zin Ku Corridor, or Chantry of Secrets | You need a character who is Ascended, Weh no Su, or that has completed Hunted! to gain access to The Underworld. Once in the Underworld, you and your party will need to complete one quest from any Reaper other than the Reaper of the Labyrinth. Once the reward is accepted, a level 20 Black Widow of random evolution will spawn. |
| Black Wolf | Eye of the North | Drakkar Lake | Sifhalla | Short run to the Shrine of the Wolf Spirit. There are one or two Jotun on the way, they can be run past easily. It's either going to be a White Wolf or a Black Wolf, just rezone until it's the one you want. |
| Crane | Factions | Minister Cho's Estate | Ran Musu Gardens | You may have to kill a few sickened animals to secure a charm location. Luckily they don't deal any damage that max armor and some health regen can't overpower. |
| Crocodile | Nightfall | Lahtenda Bog | Blacktide Den | May be difficult to charm due to enemy patrols and pop-ups. |
| Dune Lizard | Prophecies | Prophet's Path | Heroes' Audience | Occasionally there will be enemies between you and the Dune Lizard, either bring a monk hero set to Avoid Combat or rezone for a better spawn. |
| Flamingo | Nightfall | Churrhir Fields | Kamadan, Jewel of Istan | Since this area is the Nightfall campaign tutorial zone, reaching one and charming it are trivial. |
| Hyena | Nightfall | Poisoned Outcrops | Lair of the Forgotten | Just outside the town. |
| Iguana | Eye of the North | Riven Earth | Rata Sum | Run all the way past them to Shaan [Collector] and then turn around and charm one. This way you avoid having to charm while under fire from Venomweavers. |
| Jahai Rat | Nightfall | The Mirror of Lyss | Honur Hill | Just outside the town. |
| Jingle Bear | Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Eye of the North | Only available after completing all of the Wintersday quests in the outpost. Shows up with the NPC lime color instead of the normal charmable green color. If you have not completed the quests during Wintersday, you can party with someone who did, and the Jingle Bear will still appear. |
| Lion | Nightfall | Vehjin Mines | Basalt Grotto | They can spawn near enemies, you may have to clear a group to secure a charm location, or you can rezone and hope for one to spawn closer. |
| Lioness | Nightfall | Vehjin Mines | Basalt Grotto | They can spawn near enemies, you may have to clear a group to secure a charm location, or you can rezone and hope for one to spawn closer. |
| Lurker | Factions | Pongmei Valley | Maatu Keep | You will need to fight or run past some Jade Brotherhood, but it shouldn't be difficult. Shows up as a Reef Lurker, but only the red ones show up in this zone. In the Menagerie it's just Lurker. |
| Lynx | Prophecies | North Kryta Province | Lion's Arch | Just have to hit the Tengu patrols correctly, or eliminate them. |
| Melandru's Stalker | Prophecies | Old Ascalon | Sardelac Sanitarium | Depending on the spawn, you may have to kill a few things to securely charm it. Or just equip max armor and you'll charm it before taking much damage. Also charmable in Pre-Searing. |
| Moa Bird | Prophecies | Pockmark Flats | Fort Ranik | Fight or run South through Regent Valley towards the Moa Nests to find numerous Moa Birds. Same as the Strider from Pre-Searing. |
| Moss Spider | Core | Special | Special | One of two ways:
|
| Mountain Eagle | Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Eye of the North | There's one near the portal to Battledepths, can be charmed without interference from Mandragor. |
| Phoenix | Factions | Divine Path | Imperial Sanctum | Must do the Imperial Sanctum mission to gain access to Divine Path. If you can't get a party and can't hero/hench it, buy a run. |
| Polar Bear | Eye of the North | Ice Cliff Chasms | Boreal Station | Easy enough charm just before the Snow Wurms. |
| Rainbow Phoenix | Eye of the North | Hall of Monuments | Eye of the North | Read the notes section of its article for information on how to make it appear. |
| Raven | Eye of the North | Sacnoth Valley | Doomlore Shrine | Fight or run through Dalada Uplands. If running, you should be wary of the Mantids that have Crippling Anguish, and Molotov Rocktail. Once in Sacnoth Valley, zoom in to first person view. Follow the path until you have a mountain on your left, then look up. Flag any heroes or henchmen safely out of range. Select the Raven and run into one of the alcoves in the rock, repeatedly hit Charm Animal and eventually it'll get close enough to charm. |
| Reef Lurker | Factions | Archipelagos | Cavalon | If you don't immediately see one, rezone. |
| Tiger | Factions | Sunqua Vale | Tsumei Village | In an area with non-aggressive enemies. |
| Warthog | Prophecies | Sage Lands | The Wilds | Just outside the mission town. Also charmable in Pre-Searing. |
| White Crab | Eye of the North | Arbor Bay | Vlox's Falls | Its spawn location can be tricky, either pull it to a safe spot or time the patrols right and make a hasty exit by resigning. You can resign very quickly if you pre-load your text entry box with /resign and then just hit Enter twice when you want to leave. |
| White Moa | Eye of the North | Drakkar Lake | Sifhalla | Usually doesn't spawn, keep rezoning until you see the flock just outside of the portal. Shows up as the NPC lime color instead of the normal charmable green color. |
| White Tiger | Factions | Ferndale | Aspenwood Gate (Kurzick) | In the same general area as the Black Moa. Wait for the first group of Dredge to engage the Kurzick Guard and run by, then play musical chairs with the patrols and this one's yours. You could also fight your way to it. |
| White Wolf | Eye of the North | Drakkar Lake | Sifhalla | Short run to the Shrine of the Wolf Spirit. There are one or two Jotun on the way, they can be run past easily. It's either going to be a Black Wolf or a White Wolf, just rezone until it's the one you want. |
| Wolf | Prophecies | Traveler's Vale | Yak's Bend | The Snow Wolf and the level 15 Elder Wolves in the Southern Shiverpeaks are the same pet. Also charmable in Pre-Searing and is the default pet for PvP characters. |
