Max is shorthand for maximum and is used by Guild Wars players to refer to a general feature in the game's equipment, which is that every item has "maximum" stats. This means that any weapon will have a maximum damage range and a player will not be able to find/buy a weapon with higher damage. The same applies to upgrades, effects and so forth.
This concept in Guild Wars eliminates an element of imbalance found in other games where players with higher experience or have had access to areas with better loot would have weapons with ridiculous stats.

Aside from equipment, some players use the term "max" to refer to the cap on any skill/effect in the game. For example, the max speed boost is 50% and the max health regeneration is +10.
