During the Guild Wars, the Royal Family (which had ruled Ascalon for centuries) was weak. ===Quests Involved In===
Even after the Searing, King Adelbern holds that the Ascalon Army and the Wall can hold back the Charr. This is a view that is contested by many among his people. Most prominent among them is his son, Prince Rurik. Rurik believes that Ascalon should strike back at the Charr. There are also others who believe the Charr will overpower the army.

Though he is encountered on several occasions, there is no set locations players can go to to meet him. Presently there are three opporunities to see the king (other than in cutscenes):

*Overlooking the Charr battle behind the wall in pre-Searing Ascalon City. You can only see him from a distance.

*Adventuring in Old Ascalon after the Searing. One time players will see a short dialog at the Krytan camp between Prince Rurik and Ambassador Zain. The next time they will see a confrontation between the King and Rurik about welcoming the Ambassador just outside the entrance into Ascalon City.

*During the quest The Last Day Dawns players will fight along side the legendary king.

General

Descended from King Doric, King Adelbern is well-liked by the citizens of Ascalon. His easy demeanor and battlefield heroics secured his spot as one of the most popular kings in the history of the walled nation.

In his younger days, Adelbern was the champion of his guild, Ascalon’s Chosen. Tales of his feats during the Guild Wars are told and retold today—the enemies he fought growing larger and fiercer as the stories are passed from one mouth to the next.

He’s older now, and though he’s a well-liked king, his insistence that the army can hold back the beasts from the north has started the people whispering to each other in the streets. Not everyone agrees with the king on this matter. Making matters worse, Prince Rurik, the king’s eldest son and heir to the throne, is among those who criticize Adelbern’s policies. And though he is close to his son, the king and the prince often do not see eye to eye.
