GuildWiki:Wikia staff noticeboard

From GuildWiki

[add a new issue]

The Wikia staff noticeboard is intended as a way to alert Wikia staff of issues which need their attention. This place should not be confused with the Admin noticeboard.

Issues that Wikia staff cover Issues that GuildWiki's Administrators or Bureaucrats cover
  • Technical issues (server problems, MediaWiki extensions, etc)
  • Inappropriate advertisements (gold ads, flashing animation, automatic playing music etc.)
    • Note: If you are reporting a bad ad, please include the full URL that the ad links to by right-clicking on the ad link, clicking "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut", then pasting that link in to your message. Be sure to follow the instructions to report bad ads at GuildWiki:Wikia staff noticeboard/advertisements.
  • Demotion of Bureaucrats
  • Admin/Bureaucrat issues when none of them are active for an extended period of time (measured in days, not minutes).
  • Policy violations (including vandalism, revert wars, etc)
  • Protect/Unprotect requests
  • Promotion of Admins and Bureaucrats
  • General wiki interface
  • If you have a problem with the wiki's content, use a relevant talk page. Content problems added here will be removed.
  • If you are having issues with the game, use a relevant talk page or use ArenaNet's Guild Wars support site. See how to report for instructions on reporting game bugs. Guild Wars problems added here will be removed.

To create a new request, add a new subheading (you can do it by clicking the "leave message" tab near the top of the page), providing a neutral, concise, and signed summary of the issue. It is suggested that any other users involved in an issue should be informed of its discussion here.

Can't find your request? Maybe it has been resolved (older/newer).

[edit] All Image Files (X.jpg) redirect to their parent (X) wikil page - Skill Template Problem ??

Based on a spotcheck of 10 skills, the image files in the Related Skills portion of the skill page seem to have been redirected to their parent wiki page. For instance on the Guardian page, the 4 related skills all show their title twice, rather than the skill image and the title. When you click on the Aegis image link (File:Aegis.jpg) you open the Aegis page with the note: (Redirected from File:Aegis.jpg) at the top. I believe the Skills template has been modded - I have no idea on how/what to fix the redirects and get the image back.

As I continue to scan the Wiki, it seems as if all .jpg files are being redirected - no images visible on wiki pages.

I'm using the latest patch on Firefox 3.52The preceding unsigned comment was added by Separ (contribs) .

The images have always redirected to the skill pages, fyi.
Try refreshing the page using ctrl+f5. I see the images, using FF 3.0.13. btw. --- Image:VipermagiSig.JPG -- (contribs) (talk) 14:53, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) :All skill images redirect to their page because there's a redirect, it's always been like that. When people click on an image, they are most likely looking for what the image is, therefore the image redirects to the skill page. However, the issue you're describing is just the images not showing up, the alt-text of the image is the image name. You might want to clear your cache on reload (crtl+f5) because I see these images perfectly. RandomTime 14:56, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
You do know theres a way to have an image link to a page now right? without a redirect? just add |link=foo --Uberfuzzy 17:12, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Changing the skill template would add a couple thousand jobs to the queue, so we've been loath to do that. --◄mendel► 17:52, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] I know sex sells but...

Image:OffensiveEvonyAd.jpg

This is beyond a joke (I can't find the ad to report it to commuinty@wikia.com) - I only got the screenshot RandomTime 14:11, September 7, 2009 (UTC)

Still I like it :P But not for wikia -- † F1© Talk 14:27, September 7, 2009 (UTC)
Wikia staff is removing those ads as they find them (multiple ad networks, it's not as simple as it sounds). --◄mendel► 18:12, September 7, 2009 (UTC)
For a civilisation clone that doesn't have women in it and instead the option to buy forces with real money? The game sucks, and the ad sucks. Do not want. --◄mendel► 20:04, September 7, 2009 (UTC)
It's ingenious advertising, it's got us talking about the game (none of us want to play it, but still) - I love the "play now secretly" bit, the academy award for advertising civ clones with hookers definitely goes to these guys. RandomTime 20:14, September 7, 2009 (UTC)

They actually got worse after that picture (use teh google). I saw one of a fogged up shower door. Most of the images werent even made for them, they were stock photos or things stolen from costume catalogs (the fairy wing one). --Uberfuzzy@Wikia 20:18, September 7, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Image cache

The image cache is being terrible again and not updating, as well as being resistant to manual purging. Jennalee 01:14, September 30, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] MagCloud Widget

I've set the MagCloud widget to not display here, because I think that it invites people to break our copyright, which stipulates "noncommercial" use of the information. Publishing for profit as a magazine is commercial. --◄mendel► 16:33, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

If anyone wants to examine the widget, add .WidgetMagCloud { display:block; } to your monaco.css page. --◄mendel► 16:38, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Image thumbnailing issue

We currently have an error in the creation of image thumbnails. When an image is placed in an article with a specified height width, like , the thumbnail is instead created with that parameter as the width height, and then that thumbnail is placed with an <image> tag and enlarged to the originally specified width. A similar thing happens when a height is specified, like - it seems that the thumbnail engine correctly calculates the width that would give that height (38px, for 38x100px), but again it creates the thumbnail with that as the height instead of the width.

This seems to only be affecting the newly uploaded versions of images in the Ranger Elite Luxon armor/Female gallery, as well as the preview thumbnails in the "File history" section of all the images. As far as I know, any thumbnails created on or before "09:36, October 29, 2009" are still working fine, and the only other image that was uploaded after this gallery is also not experiencing this problem. [edit] I just realized that said image has a landscape orientation (width > height), whereas all the gallery images have portrait orientation (width < height). Maybe that's why it's not affected?

I considered the idea that it might be an issue with the images rather than the thumbnailing engine, but I've tried modifying and uploading completely fresh versions of the images to no effect. —Dr Ishmael Image:Diablo_the_chicken.gif 14:41, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

Isn't it widthxheight? "[..]height, like " implies it's heightxwidth. --- Image:VipermagiSig.JPG -- (contribs) (talk) 15:04, October 30, 2009 (UTC)
Um, yeah - I'd realized that and added the second part of the first paragraph, but forgot to edit the first part. -_- —Dr Ishmael Image:Diablo_the_chicken.gif 15:21, October 30, 2009 (UTC)
Hi, we are moving more towards asking people to send problems like this to us via Special:Contact. That means we don't need to worry about monitoring many pages all over Wikia, and that we can assign problems to the staff member most likely to be able to help (this one is way too techy for me for example ;)
The downside is that it's harder for the community as a whole to see what's been reported of course, but it does mean you are likely to get quicker replies that can be passed on to everyone else.
But don't worry for this issue, I've asked Uberfuzzy to call in here and see what he can see.
Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 20:33, October 30, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, teh best way to go for GuildWikians is to write the problem up here, then Special:Contact it with a copy & paste and a link to the discussion; that way, the community can pool their observations while Wikia gets an easy way to add it to their issue tracking system. --◄mendel► 22:16, October 30, 2009 (UTC)
Makes sense :) Thanks Mendel -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:28, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

It is a Wikia bug , not a MediaWiki one. See w:Forum:Blurry_Images and [1]. --◄mendel► 19:29, November 1, 2009 (UTC)
