The recent vandalism

Is, firstly unacceptable, if it is a sockpuppet of any user here they should be ashamed (not to say it is). The spammer seems to:

  • Create a link using !important before each argument in the span tag
  • Remove from the article, small amounts of content, so it looks like a very minor revision
  • Use a referer URL (url2it.com in this case - i've looked on there site, there seems no clear way to report a bad url to have it removed)

Anything we can do, apart from :D and bear it? RT | Talk 18:21, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah! RT | Talk 18:23, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Is it still happening in the last few days? And is it also happening on the official wiki or are we the only target? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:48, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't check the Official Wiki. It has happened a few hours (well, 3 hours) ago. It doesnt happen on GW2W for as far as I've seen tho. --- VipermagiSig-- (s)talkpage 21:51, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
What does the vandalism do, anyway? (I've been a bit less active here) Thoughtful Thoughtful Sig (Talk) 21:56, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
It covers the entire page with an invisible external link pointing to bad sites. No matter where you click on the page you get sent there. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:59, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I've added a javascript that should reduce the damage it causes, until the bad guys catch on and invent something new. In the mean while, the javascript *might* break some fancy legitimate use of external link formatting. Please report any such occurrences. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:59, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
And I've no doubt they've protected their own page with it. I don't see how it's possible to cause whatever they've caused. Thoughtful Thoughtful Sig (Talk) 22:01, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Ignorance is bliss. I don't want GuildWiki to turn into the Academy for Advanced Vandalism Techniques. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:04, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Something similar (or identical) was tested over here. I also looked at the HTML of the page and found probable causes why a couple of elements weren't covered (see the talk page) --Gimmethegepgun 22:05, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I've missed these vandalisms, what does "absolute" do? Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 22:29, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

It makes the positioning of the element measured with respect to the entire page, as opposed to it's immediate container. This is how it's range/size can cover the entire page. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:33, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, "absolute" makes it relative to the container. "fixed" makes it relative to the page. "relative" (default) makes it relative to the current position of the element. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:45, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
.........OK, so it makes it cover the page. OK then.Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 00:05, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Also, I first noticed something strange in the statistics page, the job queue link disappeared. Regular external links appear to work, but plainlinks isn't --Gimmethegepgun 01:07, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Just was going to post that. The main page link to PvX and Gw2wiki are gone (they are in the code, but aren't showing up). Cress Arvein(Talk) 01:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
And I just found something very strange. Check out my sandbox and look at the code. Before, only the pure external (no plainlinks) one showed up, but now for some reason... uhh just look at it. Also try removing either one of the spans and see what happens --Gimmethegepgun 01:13, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I like the idea, and for Elite PvE skills, how about half of the border silver, and the other half gold, either in the middle of the picture or the middle of the border going around. Thoughtful Thoughtful Sig 02:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
The problem I see in this is that some random person is going to come here looking up a skill that they just got in-game, and see a gray border on it, and wonder wtf is that supposed to mean??. It's not like it's in the game like the elite skill borders, where people can identify them with.--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 02:24, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
So let's think about how to easily provide the answer to the question wtf is that supposed to mean?? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 02:28, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Just add a small note to all pve-only articles: "This skill is displayed as any normal skill in-game." Felix Omni Signature 02:30, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
The gold border isn't the same as the actual icon in game. Put a border around all the skills. DIfferent colors for different things: Kurz/Lux, PvE, etc. —JediRogue 02:34, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
It may not be the same, but it's very similar, and it represents the same thing. IMO, unless we can somehow make people understand what the gray border means at a first glance, I don't really see the point in it.--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 02:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
I think on Quick References, it already has seperate sections for them. It would be a lot easier and less confusing to just add something to the skill boxes that says something like "PvE spell" than changing the icons.Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 02:37, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Possible new quick reference

I have been trying to research to make a good dervish build myself. Since most of dervish's energy management (mysticism) revolves around losing enchantments, I think there should be a quick reference for all the enchantments that give positive benefits when they end. --Voidvector 16:54, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Skins Information in Unique Weapon Template

I look over unique item pages all the time, as I think many others do as well. It occurred to me that almost all of these unique weapons and offhands are reskins of existing common/rare items, and the skin is always mentioned in the article either at the top or under a notes section. Since this is clearly useful information that applies to every single green drop, I propose that we add a line in the template under "Dropped by:" saying (for example) "Skin: Suntouched Scythe" or "Skin: Unique" as appropriate. Obviously, I have no desire to make the weapon template large and unwieldy, but since this information is on every single green item page, I think this will serve to make the information easier to find, as it willbe in a standard position. Thoughts? --Hashmir 19:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a good idea, but it will be a lot of work to fix every single unique item page--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 19:12, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Starting Dervish weapons.
Hey, my idea was liked and executed. I feel cool now. XD Anyway, I'm going through the warrior weapons and just moving the info from notes sections. For space reasons, I've elected to use "Ungula Axe dyed green" format for clear dye jobs, while just saying "Stygian Reaver" for special colors, such as Axe of the Kinslayer." If someone has a better convention for special colors, I'll go back through and change them, but I find that anything more detailed stretches the box, defeating the purpose. --Hashmir 00:24, 19 March 2008 (UTC)'
I just said "Suntouched Spear uniquely dyed" for things like Droknar's Spear. --Shadowcrest 16:58, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I said "with unique coloring" for Drok's bows. Felix Omni Signature 17:00, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
How about "Long Sword (unique)" in the box, leaving the notes saying they share the model but the color setup is different? --Hashmir 21:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
For things like that I put Similar to #### (see notes) and left the note in.--AlariSig 22:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

GW2

So, I've been thinking about it; And those of us who have stayed with gwiki mostly stayed because they dislike gww. So, we could either:

  • Create our own site

OR

  • Make GWiki into a wiki for both gw and gw2.

What do you all think? —♥May♥Wick♥ 11:14, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Look on the main page, we have a link to GW2W. I think most of GuildWiki has decided to merge to GW2W rather than make a-whole-nother wiki. Thoughtful Thoughtful Sig 11:22, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't think we'll be able to match Anet's GW2 wiki. The only reason we're still here is because we had a 2 year head start. With both wiki's starting on equal ground, their superior manpower will leave us in the dust. --Macros 17:08, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Just use the Official GW2 Wiki. The users are nice, and policies are now written and flamed :P --- VipermagiSig-- (s)talkpage 17:39, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
There are basically two factors to consider when choosing between two wikis, as I see it. People (like myself) choose this wiki because it was around first, so it has a more entrenched user base and considerably more ancillary information, such as useful notes, talk pages, etc. Others choose the official wiki because they feel that it, as an official wiki, is in a better position to be the "one true wiki," so to speak. If our community in its entirety goes to GW2W from the start, then there's no need to choose, and we'll just have one big shiny wiki with everything, which we can all agree is preferable. I'd like to think that visually it'd be more like this one, but I trust that with a gigantic userbase, everything will work out for the best. --Hashmir 18:05, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I don't know about you but theres nothing I like about official wiki, how it looks or how it is ran and frankly many members of its userbase annoy me. If they host a unofficial wiki for GW2 I will join no matter what rather then a copy of that place.--AlariSig 18:16, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) A wiki is run by how the community want it to be run. If you don't contribute to the running of the GW2W, it will not be how you want it. If you don't like how it ends up, that's probably because you didn't contribute. As of now, the GW2W has no standing rules (other than what the admins feel is appropriate for the running of the wiki) so everything can be moulded how everyone wants it to be, right from the start. GW2W won't be a copy of any place unless the community, a community of Guild Wars Wikians, GuildWikians, PvXians and anyone else, wants it to be. -- Brains12 \ Talk 18:28, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

While the official GW2 wiki shares the user database (and most of the userbase) with the official GWW, there is/was a movement to hopefully prevent GW2W from suffering the same structural problems that GWW faces. Therefore I highly encourage anyone who doesn't like the way GWW is run, to head over to GW2W NOW and help shape the policies and social dynamics of GW2W, instead of assuming it will be just like GWW and thus reject it. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 18:31, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Blah, don't bring up this sort of topic all over again. We had enough problems with it the first time GWW-splitting was mentioned. It's obvious: we don't have the strength, numbers, influence, media coverage, funds, ETC. to match GW2W in any way. All we have (maybe) is a better inheritence, less riffraffy userbase (if only because we're smaller now), and spirit. We care about GWiki to a much greater degree overall than GWW/GW2W editors to those wikis. But passion and hope aren't enough to get by on if you are going to make another Wiki for Guild Wars 2. I think it is commendable to show such loyalty, and I surely do appreciate it. But ultimately, unless some true miracle happens, I think we all have to face the inevitable truth that we are finished. I don't mean to sound so defeatist, but when GWW came around, we had some great benefits still; when PvX forked we honestly didn't lose a whole lot more than face and time;when the Wikia move happened...well, there was no tangible change, I guess. But this? How are we going to ride out GW2W? We are running out of trump cards fast. Entropy Sig (T/C) 00:53, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
What she said. (I had to look up "riffraff").Ereanorsignreanor 02:30, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Not to mention that "beating" GW2W would involve beating ourselves, to an extent. Already, lots of users there are from GWiki, as well as GWW; the majority there (last I checked) really wants the policy side of it to be a nice balance of GWW and GWiki, taking the good parts of both (yes, there are good parts of GWW's policies, and there are bad parts of our own). Splitting off into a GWiki2? We would have an even smaller userbase then now, what with so many users here more then happy to go to the new official one from the start. And I'll bet nobody from GWW currently would switch in the other direction come GW2.
Just my two cents. Don't spend it all in one place. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 07:10, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

If you want to help shape the GW2W, start contributing there -- everything is being started from scratch. Although it's hardly active at the moment, the discussion should revive whenever some Guild Wars 2 information is released; it may happen before that though, so you should try and check in every so often. -- Brains12 \ Talk 01:12, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Sounds like you're owed a fuller explanation. This page - http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Upgrade_early_2008 - on WoWWiki covers much of the info you need as we are in almost exactly the same position at the moment.

The user db merge won't be happening for over a week, so you have time to check your names. The major benefit of the merge is that your username will log you onto any Wikia wiki, and you'll stay logged in as you move between them. It also makes life a easier for the techs as your support will join everyone else's. The username change for some users is an inevitable effect of any merge. However, if you are affected, Wikia may be able to help you, especially if the other username has not edited. Kirkburn 15:43, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Well this sucks for me, since it looks like there already is a "Poki" on wikia (I get an "incorrect password" error). Poki3 is free, so hopefully I'll be able to resolve that quickly (and I'm going to register that username right now!). If anyone has an image to replace it, upload it to the wiki, find out the direct link to the uploaded file and get an admin to add it to the above. Kirkburn 19:52, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Policy/guideline regarding embedding of youtube videos in main article spaces

Note that this discussion does not care about talk pages or user pages. It only deals with articles in the main article space.

With the wikia code migration, Youtube videos can now be embedded into wiki articles (see w:c:help:youtube for details). I think official trailers obviously can be included into main articles, but how about gameplay footage for walkthroughs? What are we going to allow/disallow in terms of usage of videos in main article space? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 09:12, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Not want on mainspace at all RT | Talk 09:19, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Rational? I personally think on the Guild Wars Factions page it would be ok to embed the official Factions trailer. A number of guide articles (such as title points farming) right now uses external youtube links which might have merit of being directly embedded into the articles too (which is mostly the topic I want to explore and hear the for's and against's rationales). -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 09:27, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
For a embedded video to be useful it would have to be big enough, about 500px. I'm not sure if there's enough space for that on most articles :/ — Poki#3 Poki, 10:40, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Because it lessens the job queue/server load slightly. For the same reason double redirects are stupid, you want to always ideally link to the intended target with no stops in between. I (or someone else) could probably write a .js script that adds an emote button to the toolbar, and clicking the button would bring up a menu that displays all the pictures you can choose from. Then, anyone who wants the emotes can import the script into their monobook.js page. An outlet for creativity and humor

This all started with my random musings of what to do for April Fools 2009, something to do with Lyssa and Illusion, then the train of thought splitted and grew and merged and evolved... until it's no longer about April Fools.

Summary: Create a new namespace, the "Lyssian Archives" (abbreviated "LA"), that allows all forms of collaborative creative writing that is in-universe with the Guild Wars world. Examples include:

  • Parody (models: Uncyclopedia, Unnews etc)
  • Fan Fiction
  • Made-up skills/items (must be in-universe, so things like Lyssa's Cookie of Bemusement won't belong due to out-of-universe references)

Basic rules:

  • Should be in-universe.
  • Should allow everyone to collaboratively edit/evolve it.

You can always keep/fork a version in your own userspace.

Pros Cons/Concerns
  • Channel the creative/excess energy of people who aren't working on main articles into something that can be considered still Guild Wars related.
  • Increases a dimension for our wiki, adds more meaning to it
  • May further distract people from the "main" articles, and our mission to document the game
  • We have a past precedence of a separate namespace for subjective articles of a different nature, which ended up as a separate wiki instead. This idea might just repeat history.

→ Moved to Project talk:Lyssian Archives

Unrealistic and Completely Intolerable Server Side Lag

The typical Guild Wars policy forming process is:
  1. One user's consistent behavior creates an issue that requires systematic solution
  2. Policy gets written (that isn't targeted at the user per-se, but is targeted at the behavior).
For example, GW:1RV was because of Karlos, GW:SIGN was because of me. Some of the more recent policies were made into policies just because some younger kids think they should be formalized... Oh, I get it now, we have no choice but to bot through it.Ereanorsignreanor 15:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
WAIT! how about a bot run for every build? changing the link into an external one to the actual build in PvX?Ereanorsignreanor 15:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Eh. Ish is just gonna get a bot to direct to the pvx main page. —MaySigWarw/Wick 15:42, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
This can be done way better, why not doing it?Ereanorsignreanor 15:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
@May, 30 minutes is barely time for anyone to oppose. For example, I may oppose, but since I was off eating lunch, I didn't have a chance to say anything because of the miniscule time frame you gave.
(@ conversation)I think the problem with changing the builds to the page they correspond to is that various nerfs/buffs have taken place since the builds wipe, I'll bet most of those builds aren't anywhere near effective since then (and if so, no corresponding page exists). Or, even if none of the skills have been changed, the page may just not be on PvX anyway. I think a link to the PvX main page would work the best. --Shadowcrest 19:17, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Oppose. I think they should all simply be un-linked, pure and simple. That's what I do with other types of talk page links that are no longer valid. Anyone bothered enough to dig up build links from talk/userpages should be able to easily find the PvXWiki link from our main page and the Build article. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 19:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Just write a bot to remove the [[...]] encapsulation from all instances of the build links, plain and simple. "It used to exist, now if you can remember what the name referenced, good for you, if not, don't ask." RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 20:20, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Bosses

I'm going to start up a project to give a category to every boss (Category:Bosses). Since as I've seen, a lot of people like having time to think about it, I'll begin at 10:10 AM EST (3:10 GMT), unless there is any opposition to this. —MaySigWarw/Wick 20:13, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean. Are you just saying you are gonna properly categorize all bosses under Category:Bosses, or are you saying you are going to create a new category for each in every single boss inside Category:Bosses? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 20:16, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Both. —MaySigWarw/Wick 20:18, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
What's the purposes of the new categories for each boss? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 20:20, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
What I mean is I'm going to categorize all bosses into 1 category. —MaySigWarw/Wick 20:21, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Then don't say "Both" o_O""" -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 20:38, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I have a better (but equally time consuming) idea. Add auto-categorization to Template:BeastInfo. For everything: Boss, Species, Profession and combinations of those. (the extra work would be removing manual categories from boss pages). — Poki#3 Poki, 21:59, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Right, and make the box glow if it's a boss o_O (please use Template:BeastInfo/draft to propose any changes) -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) The templates for monsters and bosses are the same. So the bosses wouldn't work. Species isn't always the same as the category type (Summit Giant Herder, for example]]). And I guess the profession part would work, if someone who knows what they're doing would set it up. --Shadowcrest 22:05, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
If someone would be winning and had enough time on his hands he could add some extra parameters, like Boss = yes, and something like a "sub-species". It's work one way or the other. I don't edit monster pager at all, so I don't care ^^; — Poki#3 Poki, 22:16, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
You need to give at least a full day, two would be even better, for everyone to have a chance to comment on stuff like this. Not everyone is on at the same time (we are a global community), and a lot of non-admin people don't check the wiki every day. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 03:55, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Template:Boss_info? I'll get to work on it. —MaySigWarw/Wick 14:36, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Please read the section right below here... -_- PanSola is proposing to update the existing BeastInfobox to include boss info. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:10, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
After a talk with JediRouge and May, the category is currently being removed from all the pages May (and I - who for RC spam curving reasons tried to help out) edited RandomTime 19:51, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
