A district is an instance zone within towns or outposts. When a certain number of people (roughly 150) are in a city or outpost, a new district is opened up to prevent latency (lag). Districts are completely identical. They are numbered, starting from one, to as high as they need to go to prevent any one district from becoming full. Players can change their district (if more than one exists) via the district list in the top left corner of the screen. This list is also available when using map travel. In the European territory there are by default multiple districts for different languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Russian). Players are placed by default into a district that matches the language that is set in their game's options. There are also international districts where players from different territories can meet.
It is possible to observe split districts after a game update that involves modification to the actual executable file (a new build). When a new build is made available, the game client broadcasts a notification message to all players in public areas. Those who restart the game and zone back into the district they were previously in will be placed in a separate instance of that district. Therefore, players who have not yet updated their clients will not be able to see or party with those who did, even if they seem to be in the same district.
